Hot Melt Adhesives: Common Problems and Solutions (Part 3)

With the upgrading and transformation of industrial products, the demand for hot melt adhesives is also rapidly increasing. Our company provides users with various application-specific hot melt adhesives, earning a good reputation. These products mainly include high, medium, and low viscosity adhesives, as well as customized products in different colors. This article introduces some basic knowledge about hot melt adhesives for everyone to learn and discuss.

  1. Hot melt adhesive does not flow evenly from the nozzle (spraying)

Causes: Nozzle blockage; insufficient air pressure in multiple nozzles; operating temperature too low

Solutions:

  • Clean, inspect, or replace;
  • Check hot melt adhesive quality: carbonization, impurities, replace adhesive;
  • Check spray gun air pressure stability, check nozzles and nozzles;
  • Increase temperature, contact supplier for proper heating
  1. Hot melt adhesive smokes

Causes: Operating temperature too high; temperature control malfunction; poor thermal stability of hot melt adhesive

Solutions:

  • Lower temperature, contact supplier;
  • Replace malfunctioning components, contact equipment manufacturer;
  • Standardize adhesive replacement, contact supplier
  1. Poor Adhesion

Causes:

  • Insufficient adhesive application or low operating temperature, resulting in hot melt adhesive mainly adhering to one side of the substrate;
  • Due to the influence of adhesion when the hot melt adhesive is in a semi-molten state, both sides of the substrate are covered with adhesive, but many fine cured “legs” remain;
  • The bonded surfaces are not in contact or have poor contact, resulting in a smooth hot melt adhesive surface;
  • The bond is easily separated. This is usually due to inappropriate adhesive selection.

Solutions:

  • Increase the coating thickness or raise the temperature;
  • Check the pressing quality, lower the operating temperature, or use a fast-curing adhesive;
  • Adjust the pressure to ensure good substrate contact during the hot melt adhesive cooling process;
  1. Poor hot melt adhesive penetration

Causes: Temperature too low; adhesive layer too thin; cardboard surface coating (such as wax or oil)

Solutions:

  • Increase temperature;
  • Increase temperature and pipe pressure, increase adhesive application;
  • Try different hot melt adhesives, or treat the cardboard surface.
